We know it's electrical, any idea though of what it could be.

I think you just registered to this site, and aren't aware that most of these guys/girls know a lot about cars...especially here in the technical forum. You are new, don't worry about it. My ford is a beater. Most of these people have beaters also.
For future reference, you can ask these guys for advice if your car or a family members car is having problems, or if your just having problems with your Girlfriend They'll be more than happy to help you.

Does the starter crank? Like maybe the clicking is a bad starter solenoid? Hit it with something, see if it cranks then.

I think(?) they also use something like our main relay. Especially if it cranks & the clicking you hear is quiet enough to be a relay.

PS. There's a zillion fords out there. Maybe you can find a repair manual at the library??

BTW, We ended up going to the Library to get a ford manual to trouble shoot it. Was something wired up to the ignition. Thanks for the suggestive Help Blake

is this the Ford Ranger 4 cylinder? we have one at the place i work and for some reason it has 2 distributors, 8 plugs, and 8 wires. and it is a 4 banger!!! WTF is that all about? seriously i want to know if you can tell me.

anyways, with all of this electrical mess on these engines it doesn't surprise me that someone is having problems.

sounds like you fixed it though,

I've heard about some engines that have 2 plugs in each cylinder, with different spark timing. Sometimes the 2nd spark isn't supposed to go off. It's for emmissions, so there's 2 flame-fronts instead of just 1. Maybe the combustion chamber shape was prone to pre-ignition so they had to do something like this??
