Default Having Car trouble, possibly starter....

So yea.... my car is dead. Well its not really dead, but it wont start. I checked the voltage at the battery, and its just fine, 12v strong. I checked the fuse for the starter signal..... fuse is not blown its fine.

Everything is fine, until i turn the key over.... and then nothing. The weird thing is i can push start the car, and it will run for about a day. Then its back to not wanting to turn over, so im guessing its a problem with the starter.....

Anyone have any idea's of what it would be...

Other info about my car.... The battery terminal's are not dirty, and its not a bad ground either, i checked ALLLLLLLLL of that. Im not a complete idiot here. ANd when i try to jump start the car, it still doesnt start... so yea, im guessing you can see why im all like this..

So as i said the situation is as stated above.... i checked the voltage at the battery fine, i checked the voltage when i cranked it over, stayed the same no change. But the car will not turn over, the spedo was workin so its not the VSS/Alt fuse.

I am running a P28 now, but i plugged my stock ECU back in and i still get the same thing. I just dont get it.....

I could alwalys get the starter bench tested.... but that would require me to take it out of the car, only 2, 12mm bolt's and a harness but... its been cold this week. Probally gonna do this tomorrow.

BTW after i push start the car, the car will start for about a day, and then it will go back to what it has been doing and not turning over.

When it refuses to start, check for voltage at the starter signal wire - at the starter. If no voltage, try supplying +12v with a jumper wire to the battery. That'll tell you if the starter itself is OK.

If the starter is OK, then look at the circuit for the starter signal. Flaky clutch interlock switch?? That would explain why it won't crank even with a jump, but it will start with a push.

So check for voltage, and if there is no voltage run a direct line to the starter signal wire from my battery. To see if the starter is okay.

If so then check the starter signal.... ok im confused.

Damnit i need a multi-meter.....

There's a small wire on the starter, that's the signal wire. +12v tells the starter to run. Use your multi-meter to check if that wire's getting power. If it IS getting power, then your starter (or at least it's solenoid) is probably shot.

If you take a wire from your (+) battery post, touch it to that small terminal on the starter, the starter should run. So be careful, because it'll run even in gear, & you may get hurt when the car lurches...

If you don't get 12v at that signal wire, then you have to use your multi-meter again. Some possible reasons why it doesn't get power?
1) Flaky clutch switch (manual) or transmission interlock (auto).
2) There's probably a fuse somewhere in that circuit.
3) Flaky ignition switch.
4) Broken wire somewhere in that circuit.

I have pretty much ruled out the fuse, there is a starter signal fuse, its 7.5a i checked it and its fine. Ummm clutch.... yea, i been thinkin about that lately too, i didnt torque my flywheel bolt's down to spec, 74ft lbs, i torqued mine to 56ft lbs or something retartedly wrong.

Yea..... im gonna need to get my hands on a multi-meter. Or buy one, i dont know why i dont have one already.

Thanks for the help JB.

Checking the starter with a jumper wire from the +side of the battery is a good idea it will let you know if the starter is either bad or just not getting power "BTW make sure it has ground too...

P.S MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE CAR IN N OR PARK!!!!!!!!!!!!

The clutch interlock is a switch located above the clutch pedal. It's supposed to prevent you from cranking the starter unless you have the clutch pedal pressed down to the floor. If the switch is flaky or the wires are unhooked, then that could be your problem.

I JB for all his help. Is that the little button thing, above the clutch pedal? I looked at that once and wondered what the hell it was.

Its supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow, i will go take a look at this stuff, thanks again JB.
