I did an oil change today and noticed my right CV boot has split, throwing grease all over my wheel well, so I need to replace it.
Does anyone know of a site with step by step intructions for how to do this, preferably with pictures?
I found a couple, but without pictures, it was hard to follow what they were saying.

Oh and does anyone have any torque specs I'll need when I tighten up all my bolts?

invest in this http://www.helminc.com btw when you replace the cv boot you're suppose to replace both inner and outer cv boots. this is how honda wants their cv boots done since the outer cv joint can not be removed but the inner joint can. basically you have to replace the inner boot before you get to the outer boot. but you can reuse the inner if it's in a good condition, just buy some cv boot clamps and repack the joint and boot. just my .02

just get a lifetime remanufacture axle... cheaper in teh long run and less time to repair it.

why cant you remove just change the outter boot i do 4-5 of them a day like that with no problems ..... all you need is a hammer and knock it off then clean it put the grease in it and install the boot and clamp it .. not a big deal but you will need cv boot clamp plyers ... i bought my snap on set for like 25 bucks ....

I was hoping to get some split CV boots, but they're illegal in NZ, so looks like I'll be doing it the hard way.
I didn't know I'd need to replace my inner boot too, but seeing I'm going to all this trouble, I'll spend a bit more and replace it now, rather than later.

As for CV boot clamps, I'll have to look on Google to see what those are. The webpage I finally found with pictures didn't mention any special tools.

re: current boot clamps: remember, Honda loves u.

 

dude autozone axles are $60 and have a lifetime warranty, axles take like 30 mins to replace. Don't waste time and energy replacing just the boot.

 

Well I just spent about 6 hours replacing my boots.
After 1 1/2 hours I realised I forgot to get a puller to undo the lower arm knuckle, so everything was put back and I drove to Repco to get one.

Then back home and it only took 15 minutes to get back to where I was (I had all my tools ready by then) then came time to remove the boots, no problem, but the only problem came when it was time to clamp up the boots.

I've never used CV pliers before and the package had one small pic and the instructions were a joke, "place pliers at ends of clamp and compress" I had no idea and so used normal pliers and my fiance used my polygrips to pull on the end.
I think I'll have to go to a mechanic and get him to replace the clamps.

Everything was put back and it's a success, had a quick drive and no leaks or squeeks.
While I was under my car I noticed my left outer CV boot has broken.
I'll be getting a new half shaft for that one, bugger replacing the boots.

 

OT: anyone know why the CV boot splits? mine also have a small split, it's the second time and same one.

could it be from not getting an alignment? or turning the steering wheel too far out or what?

 

Age or running over something that damages the boot.

 

it can't be age because i just replaced it this past summer. also, it only happens to the same side, same one. hmm oh well, damn potholes.
