Default h22a4 vtec not engaging or weak

i have a 98 prelude, ever since ive had it it just doesnt seem to have any power. the vtec crossover seems weak to none. almost like a single over head. it doesnt scream like a dohc vtec should at ne rpm point from 4500 to 7500, even tho somtimes it redlines at 6800 or so. i have a cai and header. i realy noticed the problem after riding around n my friends gsr. it was throwing a code so i took it to a dealer, then i replaced the map sensor, new plugs/wires and all new gaskets in the head. the catalytic converter is bad so im goin to replace it and get a custom exhaust froma local mufler shop. what could be causing the weak vtec and what could help it? is it just the cat. being bad? it has plenty of oil and no leaks. tahnks!

Always let you engine warm up before trying to engage vtec mang, i bet one of your solenoids screens is plugged up.

vtec operates soley off of oil pressure.i want put a mechanical oil pump
gauge on it and check it." check the oil pressure where the oil sensor is
on the back of the block.

also check your oil level "it can be the simplest things" check your screens
and the the vtec noid itself and the oil pressure switch to.

does vtec engage or not? it is an off or on situation, not a partially on thing.

if power is weak all over the place i would pull the catalytic converter off and see if it is clogged (which can happen though i have only seen one get clogged after severe abuse of an engine), and take a drive open header....
