Default H22 civic withOUT EGR!?

Ok, besides a check engine light what could be a problem with running an h22 engine in a civic and NOT hooking up the EGR. I understand that what it does is recirculate exhaust gasses to be re-burnt, so I am hoping that I won't have any problems. However, my automotive instructor told me that it is possible to cause slight detonation? This is odd, he tried to explain it to me but I don't comprehend how. Is anyone running their H22 without EGR, and how long have you been running it like that? Any problems?

i dont have the EGR hooked up in my H22 Civic. you do get a CEL when the car is warmed up but that wont hurt anything. i would think that having the EGR hooked up and working would cause detonation not the other way around. i believe it puts exhaust gases back into your intake manifold so they can reburn most of the bad crap. that would seem bad to me as far as combustion chamber temps are concerned. i dont know if i'm accurate the way i describe how the EGR works though, *shrugs*. to answer your question, you have to worry about it failing emissions, u dont have to worry about performance loss or improper running (i.e. poor idle).

Actually, the motor will run better without EGR. If you don't want a check engine light, use a JDM H22A ECU. The JDM H22A did not have EGR.

Yes, you can run without the egr. I have nothing hooked up to my egr..EXCEPT the plug...and it it also blocked.....so basically keep the egr plugged up and the ecu will be happy eventhough its not doing anything.

wrong as stated, but the JDM p13 is much less sensitive to the egr not being hooked up or not functioning than the USDM p13. it will not always throw a code everytime you drive. talk to Poison about this topic. i gleaned my info from him.

Yes, that is correct. Detonation may become a problem because combustion temperatures under load will increase without the EGR system working properly. This does not mean your engine will automatically ping when you do not use an EGR valve. Some engines are more or less sensitive to higher combustion temperatures. Your timing, octane of fuel and carbon deposits will obviously be a factor, too.

I would be surprised if you see any performance improvement if you do not use an EGR valve on a stock or slighty modified engine. If anything, your performance will suffer if the engine does detonate.
