Default h22 auto tensioner failed

I had posted this before thinking it was my water pump that had broke but I have come to the conclusion that it is my tensioner. Let me explain what happened, I was driving in fifth gear at around 4000 rms when all of a sudden my car shuts off. I actually didnt even feel it shut off, I only realized it when I went to give it gas and the car didnt accelerate. I pull over and try to start it with no luck. After pulling the valve cover off I notice the timing was off quite a bit (more than a couple teeth) and the timing belt just slid off the cam gears very easily. My question is can this cause any engine damage? I had just changed my valves to ferrea SS valves and added new RM spring and retainers. I have already purchased a new timing belt, water pump, and i'm doing the auto to manual tensioner. Please let me know what you guys think.
