I have a 1990 civic DXHB.. I kinda want to take out the cat and gut it... just to see how it works and sounds. If it sounds horrible i will just replace it with a high flow cat. But if it sounds fine I will keep a gutted cat. Emissions is not a problem with me, so don't even bring that up. My question is how do i gut the cat. I was just thinking about cutting off the welds with a wizard wheel, then just take everthing out inside. Then weld it back up. I just wanted to make sure that this is how i should do it, before i start tearing things apart.
Thanks

haha that is soo easy.... but i go to a tech school, and i just wanted a small project that will hold me over for a few days. so i was gona sand blast it and paint it with high temp paint... just to make it look nice. Also to stop my teach from getting mad at me cuz i haven't been doing much. I thought that a gutted cat would sound pretty nice with a header and invidia cat-back which i have. But my friend did it on his 2000 cavaler.. it sounded so shity. I just hope my car sounds better without a cat on it.

Honestly, it won't. I used to have a resonator in place of my cat. My exhaust was raspy and shitty sounding. I put a cat back in to pass the sniffer. All rasp gone, sounds just like stock. Thats my input, I don't know what you're going for. You'll get some power, but the sound will change, for the worse in my opinion.
Cavaliers suck.

i don't really want it to be raspy... i like my exhaust now because it is a really nice low rumble sound with no rasp what so ever.... i wanted something that didn't sound like a honda and i got it. but i want power also.. i think i am gona try this and if i hate the sound to much i am getting rid of it and ill put a high flow cat in there.
It may actually be cheaper to get a testpipe and save your oem cat.
That way you have a good cat for passing smog/ inspection that looks stock. And the test pipe will flow better than a gutted cat.

All over ebay for like $30 shipped. Just look for the "high flow cats" that look suspiciously like a resonator, all round and chrome, thats what you're looking for.

I don't know about anyone else but that link for the test pipes, is not working. I was looking at those cats on ebay. But they still have catylist in there don't they?? Or are they just a pipe... I was thinking about getting one off ebay just to see what they are like.
a test pipe is a pipe that replaces the cat. usually comes with o2 bungs.
you will get more power, but your car will sound shittier.
if you want a nice no raspy no ricey nicey sound, then leave your cat alone

I Know what a test pipe is.. It is also referded to as a (off-road pipe). I know what they are. But i want to see if the test pipe gives me enough power and i don't mind the sound to much. So that is why i think i am just gona gut my cat. or just make a test pipe. But i did wounder one thing. why is there another O2 housing on most test pipes. Even the "high flow" cats on ebay sometimes have them. I heard that you can use another if you want. or you can just plug the second housing. What is the benifit to running two housings. and do most test pipes come with plug?
