GSR Tranny Problems???
A friend of mine has run into a big problem. His 99 GSR tranny is messed up, it won't go into gear. It will only go into gear when the engine is off, but when the engine is on it just won't go in. We checked the tranny fluid and clutch fluid and its all ok. What could be the problem?
sorry to be the one to break it to you.
if you cannot feel the "tree" the change peice is broken.
if you can feel the "tree" and cant get any gears, your synchro hubs are so
badly worn that the sychros cant work properly.
you need someone to drop your tranny and pull the shafts and diagnose it.
thats a big job. if you lived here in FL I would give you to my guy. I had to
do my 3-4 synchro hub and rings recently, change out two selector forks and
a change peice also. My tranny was majhorly fooked. If I were you, I would
look into finding a used ITR tranny and upgrade, sell this thing for slag. In
its current state the gears, shafts and casing would be worth $200 alone.

Put it in gear engage the cluth and start it. If it doesn't move the clutch is gone.</TD></TR></TABLE>
What??
If the clutch is engaged, the interlock won't let you start it. You press in the pedal to DISengage the clutch. If you do that & the car tries to move, then your clutch is dragging (doesn't completely disengage) and that's why you can't shift with the engine running. It could be clutch master cylinder bypass or a warped clutch disk, or some other things...
What's the "tree"? I'm guessing what he means is... With the engine turned off, can you feel all the gates? Or does the shift lever just flop around like it's not connected to anything?

the "tree" as I understand it is how the changepeice actuates the selector forks in
the tranny case. the selector forks drive the synchro hubs that engage the gear while moving. I take it you havent seen a broken down tranny in peices, its ok.
so the "tree" is the slots where you percive to move the shifter into its notches. that comes from the changepeice. I broke the pin offa that, so my car didnt have a tree at all at one time. Stuck in 4th gear. Fun Huh!?
yea shift gates would be the more widely known term.

Everybody's got different names for that stuff. We had an aircooled VW years ago, by brother managed to get the shift rod into the neutral position while the 1/2 fork was still engaged in 2nd. So as long as he kept the lever in neutral, he could drive home in 2nd. If he put it into any other gear it would lock up 'cause 2 gears were engaged at once. Fun, huh? Our dad wasn't real pleased...
