Default GSR tranny problem

I have a GSR tranny mated to my LS motor and today on the way home it was hard to get into 2nd and 3rd gear some of the time but not always.

Later tonight I took it for another drive and noticed that when I push the clutch in it makes a rattling noise up by the tranny and when I down shift or slip the clutch it makes kind of a screeching noise. All gears seem to work fine though.

My Girlfrineds dad told me over the phone to go about 30mph hold in the clutch and put it in 1st gear. I did this and I could hear like a screeching noise not to very loud though. He said most likely the pilot bearring

I know nothing about trannys so I need all the help I can get what is your guess?
Setup:
00 GSR tranny
ACT clutch
unknown LSD

As far as I can tell from the description, the pilot bearing sounds like a good call. Except I wouldn't have tried that test at 30mph, more like 15...

It sounds like it has to be something in the clutch. Even if it turns out to be a bad throwout bearing along with the pilot, you still have to remove the transmission. So you may as well put in a new clutch kit.

Yea clutch is still excelante! so it will stay

I am just worried that it may be the carrier bearring? inside the tranny. any one had issues with these?

The input shaft of the transmission is spinning when your clutch is engaged. So in order to decide what it is, you have to think through how the system works.

Car stopped, engine running, clutch engaged, tranny spinning in neutral. The tranny input shaft is spinning so those bearings could be making noise. Clutch throw-out bearing is spinning & not really loaded, so if it's loose I can make noise. Pilot bearing is not spinning because the clutch is spinning along with the flywheel.

Press pedal to disengage clutch, tranny input shaft coasts to a stop. Now the tranny bearings are no longer spinning so they would go quiet. Throw-out bearing is still spinning but now it's under load. Pilot bearing is now spinning.

Sometimes a clutch throw-out bearing makes loose rattling noise when it spinning UN-loaded, it gets quiet when it's loaded. Sometimes they go bad another way & make noise only when loaded.

Run through these and get back to us.

P.S. Did 1st gear even engage at 30 mph? Good lord.

Thanks alot for the help guys I took a look at it last night with the assistince of a friend to work the clutch and I am 99% sure it is the throw out bearring. It makes all sorts of noise when the clutch pedal is depressed then goes away when it is let out so it is deffinatly not in the tranny

I changed my mind about the clutch and ordered up a 6 puck kit through lsdmotorsports today and am just going to replace all that since im going turbo in a couple weeks.

As far as the 1st gear roll at 30mph It was like 10-15mph most likely considering 30 is what?? the veryyy top of 1st? lol

Ohh yea and for the guy that told me to get a new tranny.......good call on that one maybe your cousin should check his throw out bearring

Let us know how it goes, hope that does it.

But bmoua's cousin's tranny might just be shot internally. Or not. That's why I said what to CHECK, I didn't say what to replace. Different cars don't have to break the same way.

Different cars don't break the same way. It sucks... but that's why we're all here to help diagnose.
