Default gsr, not lsvtec??

currently have a semi-modded b16a. runs very well, but still searching for a torquier solution. i know i know, use the 1.8 block, no ****. my question is this:

i don't like the reliability issues with an ls block, but what could i expect out of a gsr block and built b16a head???

Either way you can end up making power with both of them. A gsr should be more reliable in some aspects. It's a factory designed honda motor. Where the ls and cr vtec's are not. A properly built ls vtec can be very reliable. Here is something you will have to weigh. everyone on h-t for the most part talk down to lsvtecs and crvtecs as far are relibility. Look at it this way the ls vtec built correctly will in most cases run you as much as a stock clean gsr longblock, and this is what people will argue about to the death. But one other way you can look at it is with the lsvtec you get a new fresh rebuild, plus if you put b16 pistons in it, it will make more power and more TQ, where at the same price you are buying a gsr with who really knows how many miles or how it has been driven.

if you break it down you have a b16...
use head, b16a pistons, oil pump, water pump,

buy:
clean ls bottom end $600
new honda rings $100
Balance $175-350 depending on what deal you can get.
new bearings $150
seals and thrusts $60
misc $200 ( rehone, hotank, etc)

around $1300-$1500

don't forget head studs!!

if you have any questions let me know

peace

well, i know the history on the block, it would be sourced from a friend whose doing a b20vtec, thusly not using his gsr block anymore...

i want to use the ctr pistons from my b16a bottom-end and use them in the gsr to really up the power. do you know which rods i will need to use???

i like the idea of the gsr bottom-end b/c everything was made to go up to 8k, so maybe just replace the rod bolts with arp's and i'll be fine to stay in an R rev range. what do you think?

CTR pistons will really raise the compression...about 12.5:1. For street, why not try P30 pistons and a thinner headgasket. I would get the rods(gsr or ITR) and pistons completely balanced from a machine shop. You really don't need new rod bolts, but hey it never hurts to add stronger rod bolts.

hmm...always heard its over 12:1...oh well it's still kinda high for 93 octane.

Compression is only 11.75:1 w/ that combination and stock head gasket. You'll be fine on 93 octane as long as you're tuned reasonably well.

With ITR cams and decent air flow you'll likely come in around 180WHP w/ that setup.
