Default Grinding in 5th

Sometimes when I shift into 5th gear I get a grinding sound. From your guys' posts it seems to be that the synchros are messed up. I don't have a waranty on my GSR, where do you guys suggest getting it fixed: Acura, Pep Boys, local Tranny shop? How much shoukd I expect to pay?

Thanks

Go to a local shop. Pep boys takes forever and rips you off, acura will rip you a new *******. Before I knew anything about cars, I took my integra to Acura to have the trans fluid changed for $90.

You might just be low in tranny fluid. Check that.

Check it, consider that it might need to be changed. In the meantime, double-clutch 5th gear so you won't grind it anymore (push clutch down put it in neutral, then repress the clutch and put it in 5th).

So clutch down, put in neutral, then let go and hit the clutch again, and then put it in fifth, and then let go of clutch. Is that right?

I just starting having the problem too!... I just installed a AEM intake and I was messing around with it... ie driving like an a$$.... misshifted into 5th...and now its grinding everytime I go into it ... Now i have to take out the intake...put stock in.... hope they dont notice the direct line from the valve cover to the oem intake.... and hope they fix it....double clutching stops it completly....

intake rocks btw... worth the money...

if a car is low on or using bad tranny fluid, is 5th gear the first one that grinds to show it? or would other gears shwo some trouble shifting into if the fluid is bad?

5th gear is physically the smallest gears and picks up less oil than any other gear so it's the first one to act up when the tranny fluid gets low.

I wonder if I should switch back to Honda MTL since I've been having problems with the Redline MTL...

When I first changed over to Redline Syn MTL in January, 5th grinded for about 4-6 weeks (why, I don't know). Then it went away, and returned with a vengence about 2 weeks ago. That's why I'm thinking of switching back to Honda MTL.
