Put the timing belt on and have tension on the belt so that they can not turn while torqueing them.

The B16 head has small holes that you can insert a punch
through the camshaft holders into the cams to lock
into place..

i know this is an old thread, but can someone chime in on other ways to do this? or is using the punch the best way to secure the cam gear from moving when torquing it?

If there is sufficient space between lobes and/or journals it is acceptable to put a pair of vice grips on the shaft. Put a rag in the jaws and use the minimal amount of pressure needed to keep the shaft from spinning. Make sure it does not spin or you will chew up the shaft.

This has worked on several occasions for me and I believe is the correct way of doing it. Make sure the motor is at TDC and the holes should line up.
