Goldiewang is going AWD
Hey guys, every since I finished my K swap in my EK hatch its been on my mind to do an all wheel drive setup before I go turbo. I weighed my options for close to a year now only to find that Wagovan rear diffs are so hard to find that I am yet to find any through junk yards or car-part.com. Also CRV rear diff's are considered weaker and have clutch packs that may fail under high HP as this is not what they are designed for.
Does anyone know where I could source Wagovan/Wagon civic rear drivetrain parts? Google doesn't know either
Has anyone out there had a turbo CRV or a need to beef up the CRV rear diff? Seems like the stock axles would break first. And with high HP has yours failed in any way? it doesn't seem like there is a market for it lol.
And with me going AWD I don't plan to do a lot of street driving so I have also considered the s2000 rear diff since their is no viscous coupler but haven't studied the s2000 rear diff or its capabilities in stock form yet.
Any insight from a Wicked CRV owner or a custom built AWD civic owner would be appreciated.

Yeah I spoke with OnebadturboCRV yesterday and got some great links on the CRV rear diff. I believe at this point after reading about the clutch pack and pumps on the CRV rear diff, I will abandon ship and start researching DSM rear diffs. They have been doing this for years so hopefully they have figured something out.
Also I read up on s2000's rear diffs last night and apparently they are so weak that a few people have broke the yolk after a tune. I read that the yolk has a design flaw in which the caps will walk out far enough to bind the bearings in the diff and cause a pretty bad failure in due time.
The only question I am yet to answer is other than daily drivability whats wrong with running a solid drive shaft (no viscous coupler). I don't think it will destroy the rear diff other than trying to launch it.

I am glad those links helped you. Your answer to your last question is actually buried in the last thread I sent you, last page, and last link. It is explained in pretty good detail with math why (in my opinion) if you plan to run on pavement, I wouldn't not have a viscous coupler unless your gears matched perfectly.
The other problem you may encounter is the length of the driveshaft and small U-joints. Definitely something Aluminum and adapter flanges so you can go bigger. I intend to do this one of these years, and have been quoted $1,000 minimum over the phone so take it for what it's worth.

Running without a viscous coupler would be like driving a 4wd truck on pavement. From what I understand the viscous coupler acts like a center diff. Same reason a wrx or STI have a center diff. Your dsm rear diff idea sounds interesting. I'll keep an eye on this thread as I'm interested in learning more about this subject.
No, that's not the problem really. It's the fact of having unmatchable (well without big $$$$ in custom gears) gear ratios from front to back. There is an -ahem- making a custom "kit" (if you can call it that) but it hasn't been proven yet.

Ahh... here we go. I NEVER go into the Appearance forum, but I guess I might need to start. Everything you desire is in this thread below for K-series. I figured someone had to of done one already, however he uses wagovan stuff.
Better jump on it now while the pictures are still up. You are welcome.

Thanks man I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about this. And for supplying a bunch of links to peoples discussions and builds. Sadly the more I look into this the less I want to do it because I am yet to run across wagon parts and I'm not so sure the CRV stuff will engage strong enough for my liking.
However I haven't given up!

Just found 2 awd wagons, both roughly 6-7 hrs away. one is drivable and the other needs towed so guess what, im digging the drivable one. Im off Wednesday and Thursday so I may go buy one of them and get one step closer on this project!
Just picked up this gutted rt4wd wagon for my awd drive.
The good - AWD system seems strong and doesn't make any noise, set of different rims with good tires, quick release nrg steering wheel and hub, and a pimp lil dragon ball z shifter ****.
The bad - On the 7 hour drive home in the most fucked up way I actually started to like it and now I am thinking about using it as a 2wd work car after I remove all the rt4wd components. at least it has a lil ZC engine swap in it lol
