What are some tips for getting the most out of every drop of gasoline with a manual transmission car? I've heard that the throttle position is more important than engine RPM. Which one is a bigger factor (and by how much) in fuel consumption?

Throttle position is usually a bigger factor than RPM, but as with most things, it is very specific to the engine and car being discussed.

Meaning, we really can't go into too many generalities other than the typical hypermiling techniques.

However, the biggest change most people can make is to coast. Your average idiot driver stays on the gas until they need to brake to come to a stop. Don't be that idiot. Coast, in gear, from cruising speed until you approach idle, then put it in neutral (ideally, you'd do this right before the idle circuit kicks in, which is 1,400 RPM for my car). If you do it right, the car will stop on it's own without brakes, and you'll have saved the most gas possible.
