Default Gauge wiring issue

I have a 97 civic and for the past few days I've been fishing wires through my dash for my gauges and two switches, fan and fuel pump. I only have my air/fuel gauge at the moment but I went ahead and ran the wires for three other gauges as well. when I finished I plug the air/fuel gauge in And turned the car on and nothing. The only thing that worked was the fuel switch when I jumped it. All the gauges are wired together to a single wire then to the ground, 12v. Etc. I thought maybe it wasnt getting ground where I had it at the thermostat housing so I connected it straight to the battery terminal and still nothing. I have my fan switch running from the black/red wire under fuse box that runs to the fan to the switch and then it's grounded with the gauges. My 12v is coming from the cig lighter and the dim wire is running to the stock dimmer switch. I do t know what's going on. Any ideas? I'm buying a test light this afternoon. I'll try to post a diagram a bit later
