Default Gas Mileage?

'96 Civic Manual Trans.

K my gas mileage keeps getting lower and lower. I used to get 34 mpg when i first bought the car about two years ago. Honda worked on my internals cuz i was using about a quart of oil about every 600 miles. They replaced things like the rings, bearings, and installed new valve guide seals. Now my car a year later is getting about 25 mpg. What could this be? Any clues at all? Should i go back to Honda and tell them to fix my car?

Thanks,
Dan

you know, i'm concerned about the same thing on my 97 hatch. it's the dx and i'm only getting about 20-25 mpg. i think my knock sensor might be a little sleepy or something. haven't really delved deep into yet though. wish i could answer your question.

DX models or TEAM NOTEC models do not have knock sensors...correct me if i'm wrong. My gas milage doesn't seem so bad hearing how bad yours is. JP Anyways thanks for replying...If ANYBODY ELSE...would like to reply that would be great so sleepyEK and I can figure out what to do. It would be most appreciative.

So do you think a little tuning will solve our probs or could it be something major? What cha think? Anybody?

When you got the car back from honda was the motor broken in or was that left up to you? If it was not broken in and you just went about driving normally you may have not allowed the rings to seat properly and thus the deteriorating mileage. If the motor was brken in properly have you tried basic tune up deals, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap/rotor? I woudl find out about the motor break in because that can cause major problems....good luck.

I don't believe the motor was broken in. I'll take my car back into honda and have them check it out.

At this point there's nothing really that you can do about it except rebuild the engine again and break it in properly.

Not a total rebuild, just rehone/rering. Shouldnt run more than 3hrs labor + parts...then again it is a dealership... Theres a site out there about breaking in motors, search and you should find it.
