Default freshly built engine compression test

just finished build ing my b series, done 30miles.
done a compression test and the cylinder pressures are all over the place,
its had new cams pistons valves piston rings hone new valves, multi angle valve job,
the valve clearances need doing(could not get a feeler guage) and its really tappy,
it drives perfect only take revs up to 4k
thanks Zak

Yes, get those valves adjusted, it could affect your compression numbers. Also, you don't need to do an oil change that early, it is a waste of money. Your oil is not worn out.

The reason you would change your oil at that point would be concern for the little bits and pieces/flakes of metal that may be floating around in the oil due to break in of parts (not that the oil is worn out). Still a little early for me, but engine break in is always a touchy subject.

As for comp, um, yes adjust your valves, lol. But don't worry too much about comp until you get into the hundreds. It can be all over the place at 30 miles due to rings breaking in at different rates.

By all means go right ahead and change your oil. It won't hurt anything. As I said, there are many schools of thought for breaking in an engine (how to run it, when to change oils, what oils to use etc.). The subject seems to draw some intense opinions sometimes, lol.

But again, you don't have to be too concerned for your comp at 30 miles. But you do want to adjust your valves asap. Extra wear and tear, as well as the possibility (depending on how tight the adjustment) of generating valve burn/wear.

There should not be a sufficient amount of metal in the oil from seating the rings to require the oil be changed. Anything produced should be trapped in the oil filter or embedded in the bearings (where it will not come out). If anything you should cut the oil filter apart and look for metal chips. If there is a significant amount of debris in the filter there is probably a different problem as the metal chips created by the rings seating are not large enough to be obviously visible. Usually, if there is debris in the oil filter it's because the oil galleys were not properly cleaned when the engine was apart.

Of course, you can go ahead and change the oil anytime you want, its not going to hurt anything like several people have posted. It's your build, do what you want and I can understand that if you have not done this very many times you many want to be on the paranoid side. I just know when I build an engine that it is sufficiently clean that it does not require it.

What about getting the assembally lube out? I idle the car until warm, maybe drive it around the block and change the oil. Again at about 150m then 1500 then every 3000 with royal purple.

For god sakes set the valve lash, before you even start a car in the future set the lash. The fact that you say its really tappy and you are still driving it tells me you are not working with a full box of tools.

I had a friend fire a fresh motor without setting lash with and it bent valves because the lash was so tight it skipped teeth on the gears. It ended up dropping the valve, catastrophic failure because he was too impatient to wait.

Never hurts changing the oil.... Sod it for that extra peice of mind I changed it 5 times in the 1st 2000 miles. The 5th time was with Semi-Synth 10-40w.

If your a tight *** change it the once.

FWIW your rings will still be seating at 30 miles... Don't listen to people that say they seat in the 1st couple of mins... Its not an instant action.

Have fun.

Paul.
