Default fan thermostat switch???

i need help!! my car overheats at idle for some reason. i always thought my fan was turning on but today i realized it does turn on but not all the time when it should be turning on. is there a switch that tells it to turn on or something like that?? i know for a fact it does turn on , it just doesnt always turn on when it should... my car is a 00 civic si please help .

Depends on what year, & I don't have a '00. But my fan switches are in the thermostat housing, where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine.

hmm.. i have one for sure though? right? if my fans are turning on , just not when they are supposed to what could that be??
