Failed Smog what to do now
Went to go get my car smogged today and the guy said "the Ford factory produces less pollution than your car" and failed me. I am running cams and a ported PR4 head with oversize valves as well as an old Pr4 computer. I plan on doing the following over the weekend for my retest on Monday, just want to see if you guys think I can pass
1) Put stock cams in
2) Set timing to 0,0
3) Replace my plugs
4) use 91 Octane
5)Switch to an OBD 2 or 1 P75

Is your cat. OK? Be sure to do the test while motor is good and hot (perhaps unplug fan?). Careful not to overheat it. Cat. must be good and hot also. I've heard of an additive you can add to your gas that helps in passing smog. Ask an intelligent parts guy. Timing should be set to factory specs.
emissions don't only aplly to the N.Y. state or CA. emissions are all around, i'm not sure if it's every state, but these are the only 2 states that do actually hassle you on it.
I'm following what another guy said on the CRX forum.
-adjustable FPR to 25 psi
-NGK HOT plugs ZFR4F-11 (extended reach)(just for smog tuning)
-Some type of MSD ingnition
This will save you a crap load of time and work.

halo this might be a stupid ? but are you in California
and trust me.. VA is STRICT with emissions and safety. inspections every year!
I second that, But the emissions tests are every TWO years in VA, Saftey is every year. Mine failed first time, had to put a new cat on it. 120,000 on it and quite a few die about that time, add to the fact the last engine was sucking more oil than a middle eastern oil rig its was no wonder I needed a new one. TOO lean isn't good either it increaces the NOX emissions. Good luck. Thats all I can say. Virginia puts the car on a Dynomometer and checks emissions under load at different speeds, MUCH harder to pass or fake your way through if you have real problems. It may be worth your while to find a trustworthy mechanic to do a tune up and whatever, probly something simple, its amazing how many problems these computers will cover up until they get too far out to compensate.

You have the stupid CARB requirements, we can put any motor same year or newer as long as you use all the smog gear that came with the motor. Cali is downrigh **** retentive about CARB and what was in it and what is in it now. But I agree VA is harsh.
