Default failed emissions badly .. nead help

okay this is a 89 CRX with a JDM B16 i went to certify the swap at the smog reff.. well the swap was fine but i failed emissions badly... the only other problems besides emissions was that my vacum lines were all wrong... and my timing was at 12 and was supposed to be at 16

heres the readout: max, hc max, co max, no
15mph- 95 216 .58 .77 726 2314
25mph- 60 105 .57 .11 786 46

now why is it that at 15mph my NO was wayyyyy high but then at 25mph its wayyyy low????? the catalytic converter is brand new installed the day before tha test... is there a break in period?? can anybody explain my weird emission results?????

fix your timing issues before you worry about exhaust read-outs.

**btw... make sure you drive around with that brand new cat con(assuming it's oem)... driving it heats it up to operating temps.

I'm also having a hard time getting past smog. I think it will help us both if we share the topic but if you have a problem with it let me know and I'll edit myself out.

These are my numbers:
15mph CO2 14.4, O2 .6, HC 42, CO .02, NO 3509!!!
25mph CO2 14.5, O2 .4, HC 33, CO .02, NO 3312!!!

These numbers say I'm running lean, correct? It has to be the fpr or fuel injectors then.

I changed the O2, cat converter, NO EFFECT ON NUMBERS across three attempts. I've tried 89 and 91 octane. Ignition timing is 17 (within spec), spark plugs are only 8 months old, changed the oil, used sea foam on oil/fuel/vacuum, fuel filter is new, PCV is good. There is no EGR. There was no wait in line so I pulled off the freeway and right onto the dyno. This is an OBD1 SOHC Vtec ZC with DC header, stock everything else. I got the VTEC ECU off some guy on ebay from Singapore. Driveability has always been great.

I can't believe the NOx are approaching double that of a gross polluter. How embarassing.

I'm going to back off the timing even more. What else should I do?

you need to get all of your vac lines setup rigght, and get the timing at 16 and that will fix alot of it. the old honda cats don't ususaly do anything for NOx as they arn't the 3 stage, they are only the 2 stage using Platinum, and Platium.

sounds like your timing is somewat advanced as your running hot at 15mph and making your NOx shoot up. NOx is created at 2500 deg F and thats the only thing that creates it. set your timing right, fix the vac lines, and then try it again. Also make sure your oil is brand new before your go, maybe flush and fill your coolent, and check your thermostat.

from those numbers you are running really hot cylinder temps, add some fuel, pull some timing, flush the coolent, check the thermistat, make sure the fan is working, and change your oil.

Timing and vacuum lines will dictate a lot in your emissions, my advice would be to get everything set up correctly and go for a free retest (my state does it, not sure about yours) and go from there.

Changing your oil will help out as well.
