Default Excessive Rod Sideplay...

Ok fellas, here's the scoop: I'm assembling a B18b w/forge internals for boost, using CP Pistons and Eagle rods...the rod big end oil clearance is fine at .002", as per Eagle's spec, however, the rod has what I think is too much sideplay, i.e., the rod moves back and forth on the journal too much. I checked sideplay, and it registers .011". I checked with Eagle, whom confirmed this to be normal and within spec. Have any of you experienced this? This is the first engine I build with this much play on the rod...the machine shop checked the crank dimensions: all is ok there...any ideas? TIA....

i do belive the side to side play is normal......there has to be some clearence for the oil to escape from the rod journal on the crank.

Yes, I know some sideplay is normal for oil evacuation on the journals, but this one seems excessive...the sideplay measurement is around .012", and from what I know this is within spec...but I'm still iffy...I'll contact earl and see what he says, thanks again.

If I'm thinking about this right, I agree.

There will be a bit of side to side play. It will all stay together right once bolted up and assembled, though.

If it's said to be in spec, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Found out what the problem was, guys: the crank was cut to compensate for a spun rod bearing, and the machine shop cut out the factory radius on the journal, thereby allowing the rod too much end play. Thanks to all who posted.

I don't think that is a problem at all. I am using Eagle rods on a d16a6, and the factory spec (at least for Honda rods) is 0.006"-0.012". Mine measured out as follows:

1) 0.015"
2) 0.015"
3) 0.013"
4) 0.014"

I finished building this motor about 2 months ago. Thing runs like a champ. Great oil pressure. I think of all the clearances in the motor, as long as the rod isn't binding--you are good to go. Also, this was with a standard crank that was never cut, only micropolished.
