Eratic tachometer readings
recently my JDM b-16 CRX tach needle started jumping around and gradually got worse. now it jumps around between 1,000 and 7,000 rpm while just cruising along, but almost works steady at idle. I ran jumpers between the coil connector and the tach signal wire on the cluster, and also to accessory power, but it didn't help; so it is not a wiring issue. the dizzy is aftermarket and has only a hundred miles or so on it since I finished the project; engine runs perfect. I don't have a spare tach or dizzy to try. Has anyone heard of this problem before.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Thanks for your suggestions.
what kind of tach? did you wire it correctly to begin with? there are warnings against wiring a 12V signal to the sender wire on the tach, in that it might destroy the tach.
This thread is currently open and working on similar tach problems: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/b16-revs-7200-a-2736888/ Give ideas posted there a try and post on your thread here the results of any tests you perform. Even if yours is a different problem, people are going to make similar suggestions for both of your situations.
have you opened up the dizzy? check the connections on the ignitor. i replaced it one time and didnt get the male prongs into the slip connector just into the sleeve. drove it around same conditions. hope that helps.
Thanks, guys, EGezy got it right. I had a brand new after market dizzy with less than 100 miles on it, but it was not assembled correctly. The blue wire spade terminal was not even on the ignitor pin, just touching it loosely. It was bent from trying to push it on crooked. They just left it that way from the factory. I straightened it out, plugged it in and problem solved.
Cheers.
