Engine Swap
I'm looking into doing an engine swap. Most likely will be a GSR. Should I go GSR tranny with GSR block and GSR head? If not, what's the reasons for doing otherwise? I know different heads offer different compression rates, but can someone explain this in noob terms for me? Do you want higher compression or lower? What head is most compatible with the GSR block? etc etc...
Thanks doood. I realize that. I'm saying, I'm not sure if it would be a good thing WITH knowledge. Thanks anyway though. Are you and grumblemarc related by the way?

If you have no clue why you would want a Frankenstein engine then skip it. Nothing you do along that venue is going to net any big or noticeable power increases.
The GS-R and B16 head differences have been debated endlessly. Bottom line is that for most people there's no appreciable difference so just stick with whatever you have. All things being equal GS-R is marginally better.
There is a galaxy of different blocks and parts combinations for the bottom end. Bigger displacement is obviously better, but a B18C1 block is a good place to start unless you're mechanically inclined. If you ARE mechanically inclined a B20 block is an excellent starting point.
As for transmissions, they are basically "plug-and-play." Go for the gear ratios you prefer and balance your decision around your wallet and your ability to find a low-mileage example in good shape. ITR transmissions are the obvious bolt-on choice with shorter gearing and stock LSD. Of them all I think the 4.7 JDM ITR is maybe the best. Or build your own with stronger syncros and a tougher aftermarket LSD.

I think I would go with the GSR full swap at this point. But I'm just curious, which is why I started this thread. Can you explain what you mean by displacement and LSD? Thanks for all the answers guys!
