Default Engine Fan

I thought I would check my timing with a timing light since my motor has been idling funny and getting about 15m/g. So I follow the hlem and I wait for the engine to warm up. Once its fully warm, the engine fan does not come on and it begins to idle really rough and miss. So I cant time it becuase its idling like ****. Why dont my fans come on? They did before I swapped my cams and I did not touch any wiring or anything like that!

Faulty ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor is the first thing that comes to my mind.

yes the fan works. Im not going to have it running all the time tho. I tried testing the ECT sensor like it says in the helm. At running temp the sensor is at 242ohms which is normal but whats weird is when the ignition on the connector for that sensor is putting out 12v while i thought there are supposed to be 5v there.

Ok I replaced my thermostat and that didnt help
What else could it be? If I turn on the A/C or unplug the ECT the fan comes on but it will not if the ECT is connected. I pulled the ECU out and tested it in hot water and the resistance is correct so im sure its not broken. I also checked the wiring and its ok. any other ideas? PLEASE HELP!

?
hard wire it to the battery and power source so it comes on when the car does
dumb question.. but how do you 'hard wire' the fan to the battery? do you splice into the fan harness with a wire and just connect it to the battery? which wire

youve got a bad ground somewhere, and or a drain/surge from something....stereo, alarm, something hooked up wrong...wInDsHiElD wIpErNoZzLeS maybe???
Haha I dont have any of that shiz like wipernozzles. So if there is a bad ground it will idle funny until i disconnect the temp sensor? that doesnt really make sense

So today I was going to go to work and my i started my car and it died as soon as i touched the gas pedal. Whatever is wrong here is getting worse.

Check the ground connection at your t-stat housing. It can cause screwy running problems and it grounds the fans too. Is it clean and tight?

shame, shame on you peeps.. The component that controls the "on"/"off" function of the cooling fan is the "thermal switch".. of course, this statement is only true in the earlier model cars.. most earlier models, such as your 90 Teg, the cooling fan receives constant 12v positive and the switch is "switch to ground"... check to see if the cooling fan receives constant 12 volts, the locate and "jump out" the thermal switch and the fan should kick on with ignition in the "on" position ( bad thermal switch)..

of course, your car may be equipped with a cooling fan timer unit which opens a whole new can of worms.. keep in touch if you need any further assistance..
