Engine Disassembly Help
I'm beginning my first engine rebuild (definite learning process) and I'm not clear about something after reading the Helms.
Does one check Rod End Play and Crankshaft End Play before disassembling anything to determine abnormal wear?
Is it safe to use a number punch kit on the rod ends and crank caps to mark the cylinder number each came out of?
Should I get the entire block hot tanked before disassembly (just pan, pumps, and head removed) to clean everything up?
Any other suggestions appreciated

yes i would definatley say check those clearences before u dissasemble that way u know what (might) need to be replaced before reasembly...(for example u wouldnt like to find out that your thrust washes are out of spec after u already bolted the caps on)..and i would not recomend hot tanking with the block assembled...as far as using a number punch ive seen people do it but i usually just clean the rods real good and just use a sharpie
....also remember to take your time...ive seen people rush just so they can brag how fast they can build a motor.not worth it...good luck

I used a number punch (lightly!).
I just ordered new thrust washers along with my ACL mains and rod bearings from camp1320, they were super cheap.
hey good luck on the teardown!

Check clearances first
I plan to replace all the bearings too but don't want to get caught out later. Anyone else got input?
I plan to have the rods shotpeened, so I question if marker will make it thru the process. That is why I thought about a number punch.
Time is of no concern to me.

if you are putting new rod and main bearings in it it doesn't make sense to me to have to check it unless you really want to, you would see abnormal wear when you see what shape the bearings are in. I would check it afterwards though.
it is safe to use a number punch
rip the motor down then get everything cleaned don't make sense to do it twice.

well i believe he was just talking about crank shaft endplay..not checking main and rod beaings..i think it would be better to check before so he knows if he needs to buy new ones...also checking after like u said..ive seen brand new thrust washers actually be a little too thick and have to be machined down a little..
