Engine building gurus.....Need your help
I really want to build my own block just because I think it would be fun, but I don't know where to start. I've replaced valves on the head, but installing bearings on the crankshaft and checking clearances is what I'm concerned about. My question is how did you learn, or is there a book or a site I can check out to help me out? I've searched but come up with only vague answers. I was hoping if the experts here could guide me in the right direction. Thank you!
It is actually really easy to install bearings and check clearances. I recommend finding someone that has used plastigauge before to show you. Get yourself a good torque wrench, ring compressor/expander, some assembly lube and you will be set. You will also need a good machine shop to bore/hone cylinders, balance, and line bore (if required). A factory service manual will really help you out as well and is well worth the $$$. Being clean and meticulous is key when assembling a engine.
Reading the Helms manual for your particular engine might be a good place to start. A ring compressor, ring file, strip of green plastigage, torque wrench and normal hand tools would be a minimum to start. You can do it...it's not brain surgery. When in doubt, ask questions.
Thank you everyone! It's going to be a while because I just started to collect parts, but hopefully it will go smooth. I LOVE THIS SITE!
