Default Engine cutting out and tach going nuts, help.

I just purchased a vehicle from a well known forum member. The person failed to mention quite a few things during the sale regarding the vehicle.

First, the engine seems to sputter pretty hard. I know the car needs a new tuning session so i just figure its because of the bad tune. Upon further investigation its actually the engine fully cutting off or shutting down. some times it sputters intermittently for a few seconds at a time, sometimes it sputters until the engine fully shuts off for a second and kicks back in. When the car sputters the tach and speedo shuts off too. I also looked at the sellers old post and he states that this occured when he tried drag racing for the first time. All this leads me to believe theres a loose connection somewhere, im not to familiar with Hondas so could someone give me a suggestion on where to look first.

Second, the tach goes bizzerk when revving in the upper RPM range. When cruising its fine. WTH.

TIA

This sounds like a ground wire issue, check your grounds, one on the thermostat housing which thats for the wiring harness, also check the ground that goes from the frame rail to the tranny, and the ground on the battery that goes to the frame, make sure the connections are tight and both surfaces are clean.

Could also be your ignitor going out.

The guy said he changed the ignitor right before i picked the car up. besides, would the ignitor cause the tach and speedo to go out?

If you had only said the tach was jumping, I'd suggest ignitor (ICM). But since you said tach and speedo, that does sound more like an intermittent connection of some sort - perhaps a ground. From where did the guy buy the ICM he replaced? Hopefully it's OEM because 3rd party ignition components don't seem to make the grade that OEM does.
