Engine Crane Rental
hey, i dunno where else to put this, and i figured you guys would have the most need for an engine crane therefore would know where I might be able to rent one.
None of the Hertz Rentals around here have them, and I really dont feel like shelling out a shitload of money for something I will use like twice in my life you know?
I live in the seattle area and need an engine crane to take the motor out of my friends teg, if you can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!!

If you don't have an A-Z near you or United rentals... find your nearest U-Haul center and rent one there for $39.95/day I think. Or you could make friends with someone who works there and get it for free
I used to work for U-Haul... all the U-Haul centers used to rent all kinds of ****. Most had two types of engine hoists, one you could disassemble, and one you could tow. Our center had both, most should still have them.... you have to find a center though, not some little ma and pops corner store dealer.
you can drop the engine out the bottom if you want as well? just jack the front end up high enough after you plop it on the ground and slide it out. i have dont it both ways and both work well
Screw you guys, I'm... going... home.

You can buy a hoist at PepBoys for $120 (sometimes on sale for $110 or even $100). Use it for a while since there is no pressure to get it returned within 24 hours, and then resell it later for $70-$80.

thats how i took my motor/trans out.. i put a rug underneath the motor and trans.. jacked the car up as high as i could on stands, and then lowered the motor/trans slowly down using my jack and voila!! pulled the rug to slide the motor out from underneath..

not a bad idea, but how reliable are those cheap engine hoists?
and I kinda like the idea of lowering it out the bottom, but then how do you get an engine back in?

those chepa engine hoists are for our honda motors, nothing wrong with them.
when you go to get it back in the bottom, once you get it under the car, scoot some wood under neath it to give raise it a bit so when you lower the chassis on to it you dont have to lay the core suppport on the ground to get the mounts to line up, it you have a couple strong guys it shouldnt be hard to get it where you want it. you just have to the the upper tranny and engine mount and then the rest go in easily. either way
GOOD LUCK!

My dad and I bought one for like $100 from Pep Boys. It was like $40 to rent one for a day so we figured we'd pay a little more and just own one. It works great and is real beefy, can't beat it.
I fit one on my Saturn when the rear seats were down, should fit in an Accord the same unless your seats don't go down. Bring a moving blanket or garbage bags to put down so your interior doesn't get dirty.
