Engine Conversion Advice
Hello, I wish to put a B16 into a VW mk1 golf would anyone know where I would need to start?
What kind of things would I need custom engine mounts? would I need a custom Loom or could i use a stock one, what is the difficulty of having a custom made manifold and driveshaft?
Also would need to upgrade the brakes so could i use a modern brake servo from a Honda and pipe it into the VW system.
I would also like to add power steering, would I just need a short column power steering system from another car of similar size?
any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Your engine mounts would pretty much have to be tacked together while the engine was supported in the engine bay via a crane or supported on jack stands. More likely than not a B16 engine harness will get the car running, but the vehicle speed sensor in the trans, and the crank angle sensor will likely put out signals the VW's cluster won't know what to do with. Assuming that the subframes do not get in the way, a B16 header would probably work, and the exhaust fabricated from there. CV shafts would be custom.
We are just finishing an 02 S2000 engine and transmission in a 76 Toyota GT, It required a custom engine bay sub-frame for motor mounts and shock towers, rear end is stock S2000 with custom drive shaft/axels, wiring is mostly S2000 with an added Painless wire harness and fuse box and an added 6 position fuse box for added circuits, Auto Meter gauges and sensors were used and a Hondata ECU was used.
Needless to say It was a lot of custom work and wiring, although using as much of the S2000 wiring we could did make it easier/cleaner, [also did a tuck]. 94

You can do anything your abilities allow you to do. However, usually when you have to ask it means you do not have the abilities in question.
You would need to fabricate mounts, shift linkage, custom fabricate a wire harness, if you want to upgrade brakes I am very sure that a VW enthusiast forum can recommend a better way than honda parts. If you want power steering you are also going to be best off looking at vw forums to find if another vw power rack will fit, then see if Honda power steering pumps produce correct pressures...then fabricate pressure lines....or fabricate a mounting bracket to use the vw pump on the honda engine....or build a system around an electric pump.

I have seen a few original Minis with b-series swaps. you can probably get a lot of information by finding out more about those swaps and how they get things to work in older, non-Honda chassis. obviously the hard parts: mounts and axles and so on would be different, but the harness and things required to get the engine to run should be the same/similar.
