Engine Codes?
I understand that there are different series of honda motors example B series b16 b18 b20 etc... and also D series example D15 D16 etc... But what does the letters after this mean example B16a B16b B16c and so on. Also, what does obd1 and all that stuff mean. And what is the difference in a hydralic manual tranny and just a manual tranny besides the obvious. Thanks.
Engines:
First letter is the major architecture of the engine. B, D, F, H...
Next is the displacement. B18 is 1.8 liters.
What comes after that identifies the engine more completely, but there doesn't seem to be any overall scheme. The A in B18A doesn't have to mean the same as the A in F23A. It's probably just assigned during design of whatever engine Honda wants next...
People around here refer to cable trannies or hydraulic trannies. What that means is a tranny with either a cable clutch or a hydraulic clutch. The difference is the mounting points where either a clutch cable vs. a hydraulic slave cylinder are bolted to the bellhousing. They changed some other things at the same times, like clutch sizes or maybe gear ratios, but that's not fundamentally linked to the type of clutch.
OBD means On-Board Diagnostics. The car can display error codes which indicate which systems are not working properly. OBD-2 is more sophisticated and the car is required to measure it's own emmissions equipment. Like for example OBD-2 cars have a 2nd O2 sensor that's only there to measure whether the cat is still working.
