Default emissions failure...

my hydrocarbons @ idle were 236 ppm and the max is 220 ppm.

everything else passed easily.

is there anything i can do w/o having to mess with my exhaust.

95 gsr i/h/e---test pipe.

i would put on my stock cat, but i cant seem to find it. i think an ex-friend borrowed it a couple of years ago and he is long gone.

i just dont want to spend the money on a new cat...

i know i'm a jackass for my test pipe. i put it on 3 years ago and wish i wouldnt have...

timing will also effect HCs try retarding ur timing before testing also if the converter is firing that will cause high levels

HC's are essentially unburned fuel. Unburned fuel can come from rich a/f mixtures, evaporating fuel or improper ignition timing.

Retarding the ignition timing would basically allow LESS time for the fuel to burn...so advancing the timing should help out with HC #'s.

Leaning the a/f ratio out would also help with the #'s.

Get a catalytic converter, pronto.

high HC indicates a misfire like unburn fuel going down the exhaust. if you have a reall low o2 this will confirm a misfire at idle. a rich condition will also cause this; but, it will rise your co readings as well and lower your co2 reading. i would start to look at your spark plugs, cap, and ignition rotor for problems. most likely it's your plugs. 80% of fail HC honda and toyota's I get are because of plugs or customer just did not warmed up vehicle long enough.
