emissions failed 4th time
Well this time I had some hope my car would pass. I put a stock ls catalytic converter on it to replace the kteller custom high flow cat in hopes that would do the trick. But my hydrocarbons are still sky high at 365ppm, and the legal limit is 220ppm.. I dont understand what else would be the problem, and Iam totally stumped. I have a first generation b16 in my crx which is obd0 with no other modifications besides a PWjdm intake, Profab header, and thermal exhaust. The ignition timing seems dead on as the car runs fine with no bogging or hesitation. Iam just looking for some insight on my problem. Would converting to odb1 help? thanks
what else have you done to try and get it to pass? also, what ECU is the car running on? and does it have stock injectors?
any chance you have the NOX, and CO, numbers and limits? that would also help in determining what can be done to get it to pass.
lastly how old is the o2 sensor? is it a one wire or a 4 wire? I am assuming since your obd0 that it's a single wire...if it's more than a year old, you should change it

Sorry to hear... That is alot of HC's. How is it running at the rpm on the tests? is there a miss or something? Give us a short replay or the link to your other thread.
How much O2 was there on the test?
What is your CO reading?
With that many HC's I know the Nox was low.
You have to watch what cat's you put on these cars as some will not heat up quick enough to pass the test. So bigger is not always better.
I will try to help you out and get through this. Also provide a list of what you have done so far. That will limit my questions.

Sorry guys I forgot to post up the c0 numbers like I did in the other threads. Today all they tested was the idle test,I got 0.00 PCT CO today. I dont really understand why that is 0 but that is what I got.. All of the other tests that I have failed have passed the CO test with results such as 0.80 PCT,0.70PCT. The legal limit is 1.20 PCT so I am doing good in the CO department. I have 2 single wire oxygen sensors like OBD0 Hondas should, they are welding into my header at the same place the stock cast manifold places them. One of those single wires is brand new. If the other was bad the car would hesitate, bog, and throw a code, all of which it is not. So I dont think they are the problem. The car doesnt have any misses and the spark plugs look fine, BKR7e11's I believe. On all of the previous tests I have never been tested for Nox. I figured the LS cat was suitable and plus thats all I had available at the time. I understand where you get the idea the cat may not be heating up enough as I have thought that myself. thanks for the help smog man

hahaha, everyone's overlooking the obvious. i worked at the emission center 1 1/2 years in chicago. the way the systems calculates the output it should see, is of the vehicle being tested and what size motor it came with from the manufactuar. the reason the readings are so high is the system the emission is using doesn't now u have a b swap whitch puts out a higher amount of emissions (more inflow in =more emissions out) as compared to the d series it came with. you can get the car to pass but it is a lot harder because your running off of d series emission specs. make sure your afr's are perfect, and your cat is fully warmed up.
lol well I wouldnt have thought of that.... thanks for the input. so what wold you suggest as far as possibly getting a waiver? It says if you spend 450$ trying to get it to pass then you can get a waiver? I dont know its just really frustrating having to pay 14$ every month or so only to fail. expletive emissions and expletive Al Gore

So, I'm having the same problem just out here in Cali. To pass out here we have to go to a state smog ref. that completely works over everything.
But your HC's are really high. Anyways you need to put the factory exhaust/intake on and diconnect the battery to reset it. Then you should be really close.
Heres why= The HC's are unburnt fuel (No surprise there). However, don't mistake more power (I/H/E) for more efficent running. In my case I'm at 90ppm and need to be at 64ppm on a OBD2 EK. But my other 91 Si that is state smog legal has a B16A still puts out way less.
In your case the intake allows to much air which distorts the ideal factory program and the header will disapite heat to quickly allowing it to cool off easier which makes the O2 sensor to lean out getting good gas mileage yet poor (by there standards) emissions.
Even though they have carb legal #'s it doesn't mean it runs (emissions wise) better.
All in all if there not sweating that you put the engine in the car in the first place then you've won half the battle. PM me if you have anymore questions.

hah they dont even know I have an engine swap. They type in the mileage, and the vin and it brings up an 89 crx si wuth d16a6 in it I suppose. Iam getting about 30 mpg right now. I suppose I can get a stock air box from somewhere but I dont think I will be able to find a stock b16a1 exhaust manifold with 2 02 sensor bungs in it.. I dont know. I would rather pay $450 somewhere on misc. bullshit like a brand new stock cat or something so I could get a waiver. converting to obd1 would give me more options with stock one 02 sensor manifolds aswel so that might be the route I need to go.
I've got the factory manifold if you need it. But you need the down tubes. Any other stock b16a tubes will work. Make sure there a b16a though because the bottom flange on the gsr sits at a different angle and there about 2 inches shorter.
The state forced me to convert my 91 si to OBD1 inorder to smog it. So I really don't need it. You give me a few days and the money for shipping and its yours.
I would personally convert it to OBD1 but after you get it smogged since your so close and the fact that your still going to need a factory header and intake to cut down the HCs even if its OBD1.

doesn't matter if you tell them if you have a swap, cause in your case you motor came with a 1.6l stock and you swapped in a 1.6l . just cause its from a different car and a dohc they wont class it as a hotrod being tested. if you want you can go tell them (being the guy is a noob to hondas) tell them that you never knew you had to tell them before and say you swapped in a b18c or something (1.8l dohc vtec) and then they have to test it as a hotrod therefore you limits would be upped a bit and giving you more chance to pass.
now if you had a dx that came stock with a 1.5l and you swapped the B16 (1.6l) it would be a hotrod class.
hope that helps you some, i dont know how much different your smog/emission test are to ours but i am a drive clean /emission inspector i do tests here in Ontario, Canada
ya you do have a problem with your fuel burning properly, try running regular fuel(providing your not boosted) and changing your plugs.
is your car throwing anycodes?

The OBD0 manifold (B16A 2- O2 holes in the back). Everything I drive is either OBD1 or 2 (except for my beater).
The manifold is yours if you want it, just pay for shipping. (Its just the manifold not the down tubes). Let me know.

maybe your fuel injectors are leaking or the fuel return line has a block or something
my gas tank rusted out of my 89 crx si about a year ago and cloged the regulator and caused a reading about that. soon after i had to replace the entire fuel system. cant say that was the most fun thing to have to do.
actualy i had to replace the entire engine last weekend. lets hope that isnt your problem
