need more info.....

#1 - it almost sounds like you have a fuel issue maybe???.....like waaayyy too much fuel is getting into the motor (stuck open injector, bad pressure regulator, clog in fuel return line..) causing it to "hydrolock" When you step on the gas pedal your allowing much more air in, to some what compensate for all of the fuel? allowing the motor to breathe....in turn you may have sparks in your manifold from all of the fuel actually igniting in there? - this is without a doubt a long shot but i guess its possible

ORR... this seems to be the more LOGICAL explination....

#2 - your timing is off....if you didnt tamper with the timing at all its definitely possible that the belt actually "jumped time" (slipped on one or more of the timing gears) this can cause backfiring or "sparks in your manifold" and can cause hard cranking symptoms...again, with your foot floored on the accelerator pedal your letting air into the motor allowing the motor to "breath" easier, in turn will crank over easier....

these are just shots in the dark.....

let us know how you make out, and we need more details!
