eliminating power steering....
I'm getting ready to perfrom a swap and I'm courious how to eliminate power steering?? I have an 1995 Civic EX and I want to remove it completly without changing the rack. Is iot possible??
remove the power steering belt. its the closest upper belt to you when you pop your hood. you can figure out how to remove it, it just involves loosening the thing it attaches to. at least look at it and give it a try.
So I have to change the rack out huh?? There's no other way?? Someone had told me that you can loop the power steering lines and retain the the PS rack. Is that true?
I like the manual swap myself. have not tried that looping of line setup. to my knowledge I don't really see how that works as it just blocks fluid from coming out but would not make it turn easier or less effort as there is no pressure from a pump. reason is I think a manual rack is ratio'ed differently as opposed to a ps one to make the turning easier.
the power steering rack has a closer gear ratio so its alot easier to turn than the manual rack... if you plan on getting rid of it completely cut the lines with 10-15 inches left and slip rubber hose over the line and let 2 inches hang past the metal lines so you dont cut your self up on the cut end..... DO NOT CAP OFF THE END OF THE PS LINES because you not be able to steer .... after you cut the lines throw a towel over them with a bin underneeth and turn your wheel back and forth to get that fluid out of the lines and the towel is so you dont make a mess because that **** goes all over the place and the bin collects the drippings.....if the rack does ever crap out on you, look for a manual rack that has equal or closer gear ratio then the ps rack.
if you have any questions post em

woooo...I'm thinking manual rack to be on the safe side. While the motors out the rack is easy to get to and like ctr610 said if it CRAPS out...I'm gonna be **** out of luck Thanks for the help boyz
changing to a manual rack its not necessary and not a good idea since the manual rack has a way ''slower'' ratio.
just take everything out, loop the lines and put a breather on it.

I said IF it craps out, It most likely wont so you should just keep your money and keep the PS rack because its not worth getting a manual rack. I have a now manual PS rack and it works great because i did it the right way and left like 10 inches for the PS lines so water and dirt cant get in my ****. But if you wanna get manual get manual its straight just drive a civic with manual steering first and see how much you wont like it Your first post said is it possible to keep the PS rack and all we are trying to say yes it is and its better.

no one said there is no other way. you DONT have to, but removing power steering but not changing the rack will be alot tougher to turn that a nonp/s rack.
oh yeah, and if you told us what kind of engine swap youre donig we could help you explain what to do

um 3hp? i really have no idea, but i know its one of those things that is almost better not to have (on a civic) especially if you plan to drag it or soemthing. besdies, you really cant tell after about 10mph anyways, and yet you do gain SOME power from it. its a plus in all ways as i see it

...i was just about to say this...
have fun steering, at least you'll gain some upper arm strength...lol
the manual civic rack isn't bad at all, as some are claiming to be in the turning ratio dept. I definitely reccomend going with a manual rack if you really want to eliminate P/S though.
BUt, if you reeeeally want a quicker turn ratio rack & pinion, go with any 94-01 Integra rack/pinion. It has the quickest turning ratio. Only problem is, a full left turn is limited on the integra rack compared to a civic rack which turns more. Right hand turns are full though. I know cuz I've tried this on my 92 hatch long ago...

i had a 2000 ex with a b16 swap . the shop diddnt put the p/s belt back on so when i got home i just started pulling the whole system . the only thing i left was the power rack., i plugged it up right in front of the strut tower drivers side with a big bolt . it never leaked at all ran perfect until i put the car into a ****** guardrail at 80 mph
, now i have a type r , but im not gonna pull the ps on it ,, good luck with that tho .
