Default Effects of low gear oil

What are the effects when you have real low gear oil for a m/t?

I noticed under my car on the tranny, something seems to be leaking. Its definatly not engine oil, and is more like a clear, odorless fluid. Gear oil does have a odor to it correct?

I use brake fluid to fill the clutch resevoir, but someone told me that you put gear oil in the actual tranny. I havnt put any gear oil in yet, and thanks for letting me know. Then it would probably be brake fluid leaking? I refill my clutch resevior every so often.

Sounds like fluid from the slave cylinder. Brake fluid does have a distinct (di-stinkt??) smell, and it has an almost sticky feel if you rub it between your fingertips.
