ahh the 86-87 Si engine/ecu/ignition system. I'll reminisce. Ok basically any hopes of upgrading your ecu just went out the window. Why? because 84-87 civic/crx's use a vaccum advance type ignition system w/external coil. The ecu that controls that ignition system isn't reprogrammeable...unless you somehow find one of those rare *** Feel's chipped 84-87 PGMFi reprogrammed ecu's, which I'm sure you'll never find. (I've never found one!). And because of this vaccum advance style ignition system w/external coil, you cannot use any 88-91 ecu at all. The car will not run. I tried this back when i owned my 87 civic.

However, there is an option for you. You can use an 86-87 integra ECU if all you want is to have your redline increased. The 86-87 integra ecu redlines at about 7500rpm vs the 86-87 crx/civic Si ecu which cuts out at around 6500rpm.

thanks for the info, alot more than i could find. i don't know about that 6500 redline though, i have had a few pissed off moments in my rex before and rapped the tach around once or twice, maybe its not like others that won't let it go passed set rpm at all. one last guest, is the xternal coil upgradable to say msd, jacobs, ect.???? how bout msd box??????? is the teg(pg7) ecu give any better performance inprovement?

well when i had my 87, I did run one of those MSD external coils...but after I think about it, I don't even know why I ran and MSD ext. coil....it didn't do anything for me. I eventually put the stock ext. coil back on. Actually, why do you want put an MSD on? you going turbo/supercharger/or nos? if not you dont need it.

The 86-87 teg ecu should show some slight gains...slight tho....besides a higher redline.

I THINK.....don't quote me on this tho... an 86-89 integra tranny can be mounted to an 84-87 SOHC engine. If this does work, you'll need to use the 86-89 complete axles. The gear ratio on the integra tranny is way nicer (tighter) than the any of the EW SOHC trannys too.

A lightened flywheel is always a good upgrade...you'll get some snappy throttle repsonse once you add one of these.

also dosn't 1st gen have rev limiters? have been pissed off before and hit just under 8000rpm's, redlines at like6500???????????????

Here are my thoughts about the stuff covered above...

86-87 Teg ecu and injectors, which are bigger than the Si ones, make a noticable difference when combined with i/h/e.

I don't think the teg tranny bolts up to the CRX block. The way I heard to make it work is to use a wagon block, Si head, and teg tranny.
