easiest way to remove axle
ok, so i'll be removing my axles for the first time this weekend. what's the easiest way to remove them? do i have to remove the balljoint? seems like that's the hardest part and most difficult part. is there an easier way to do it? it's a 90 civic dx.

separate the lower ball joint, if you are removing them alltogether, you will need to remove the bottom half of the shock assembly, the cv boot wont fit. you can make it but you may inadvertantly disassemble the inner joint.
There are a million threads that go into exactly what needs to be done to replace an axle. But it's really a very simple process, once you do it once, the next time is cake

very good howto
I prefer to use a spreader/seperator on the ball joint. Beating the hell out of suspension components just doesn't sit well with me.
edit: if you want to get really good at this, use pep boys axles. if you only want to do it every once in a while, spend a little extra $$.

You don't have to remove the ball joints, you just have to loosen the lower one to allow the LCA to drop down so you can remove the axle. That isn't the hard part, the hardest part we had was removing the 32mm axle nuts. Even after standing on a huge crow bar we couldn't get it loose.
If you don't have access to air tools like us, read this thread I posted recently in the EG forum.

A tool that we found useful to loosen the lower balljoint was this cheap 'tie rod' puller from Harbor Freight.

It literally took like 30 seconds with this tool to loosen the ball joint, much better than whacking it with a hammer IMO.
Oh, another useful thing to do is to ziptie the brake caliper out of the way while you are working, better than letting it dangle there by the brake hose.

dont remove the balljoint= hard, what you need to do us unbolt the shocks and springs, its a whole assmbly. Then take out the bolt for the LCA and swing down the hub and pull the axles out. do a search for a better how to .
