thanks for the clarification on dc'ing though I understand it now. It's not something I make a habit of since it's not completely necessary, i just downshift normally when coming to stops...but it's definetely good to know and even better to know how to do it correctly

Yeah, that's a 'don't try this at home' trick for most people. Like I said I don't usually do it on my Honda because the gears tend to clash. I can upshift smoothly without the clutch with no problem but downshifting is another matter.
My RX7 was easy because it had some slop in the tranny. It's funny, it was so easy to do that when I sold the car the guy who bought it didn't know how to drive a stick too well so he made me drive on the test drive. Second gear made noise on decel and I didn't really want him to hear it if I could avoid it. So while driving I heel-toe'd as normal but was realy smooth and kept any decel load off second gear so it wouldn't make the noise. I guess I did it too well because the guy said, "Does this car have an SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox)?".
And this was in a 1985 RX7
