Default dont feel VTEC ENGAGEMENT?!?!

my friend has a eg hatch with 95 gsr and 95 gsr ecu. he has some bs intake and a tanabe racing medallion exhaust which is real deep. we cannot hear his vtec engagement to well. it seems like it does kick in at 4400 but we can barely hear it set off. the power is nice but then again i never drove a gsr hatch, we has had lsvtec and b16s and you can definately tell when vtec kicks in but in this car it doesnt seem normal. there are no cel's and the wiring looks to be right! anyone have any ideas? thanks

its probably the exhaust.my friend ran open headers til he got his piping and it sounded like vtec popped in,then after he got an exhaust u could barely hear it.
