do I have to have it hooked up or can I install a gauge instead?
I want to have a permanent oil pressure gauge instead of the stock sending unit cuz its kinda useless.
but was wondering if the ecu needs it for anything at all to run properly?

They call them idiot lights for a reason... they don't talk to the computer. No, not even the temperature gauge sending unit. The cluster is all outputs coming in to be input into the cluster. Talk about a cluster...
IIRC it is set to come on at 5 psi. By that time your engine is long gone. The only time it is of benefit is if your clearances are so bad at idle that your oil pressure drops down, but even then you are in need of a major overhaul.
