Default DIY shift light vtec controller

This is a bit of a tough question. Has anyone heard of using a shift light as a vtec controller? I've heard you can run it to the stock tach, and to the vtec solenoid. When the light lights up with the corresponding pill, the vtec activates. However I've heard that it is unsafe because the fuel curve won't change. Would a fuel pressur regulator fix this, if so how? Or is it safe? Any suggestions or ideas would be great. Maybe someone knows a link that details this process.

Thanks!
