Default Distibutor Problems

Okay, I just got this car not to long ago, 3 weeks max, (93 HB Si)

It has ran fine-great since I got it, with no problems at all. But starting a few days ago, I started to get a weird squeeking noise under the hood. It was really anoying and some friends noticed it also. They suggested I tighten my belts. Hey, no biggie, I can do that.

Well I pop the hood, feel the betls for good tension, they seem fine. So for the hell of it, I start the car up and the squeeking noise comes along. But its not coming from the belts. Its kind of a squeeking and grinding noise. At first I thought it might be the tranny, but then I leaned in and the Distributor is the one makeing all the noise. I put a hand on it and its kinda shacking too.

I then shut the car off and pulled the cap off the dist. Its got brown stuff all over the place. That I have no clue what it came from. Evething looks fine in side there and nothing looks broken. The little spring that is in there, looked a little bent out of shape. So I straightend that out and put everthing back together. Started the car up and it worked with no squweek. Shut it off and went to bed.

Come the next morning I start the car up the squweek and grinding noise is back

You probably need a new distributor. That brown stuff is some of the remnants of your dist. shaft bearing. If you take a closer look you'll probably see bits of metal all over.

Pull the distributor cap off and see if you have a rusty colored powder in the cap or on the rotor. If you do then that is a sign that the bearing is shot. just replace the bearing like I did

the bearing for the distributor is shot , replace it before it siezes up. I replaced just the bearing, all it cost was $40.00 Canadian.
