dohc = double overhead cam
sohc = single overhead cam

in a DOHC it simply means that there are two camshafts which control the opening and closing of the valves. one for the intake side and one for the exhaust side.

in a SOHC one cam does all that. meaning that both profiles are on one cam.

in honda world DOHC motors are usually the performance oriented while the SOHC are bread and butter 'daily drivers'

DOHC allows for alot more adjustablity as well as more control over whats happening with the vlave train and so on. in the case of hondas 'extreme' control of valve lift with useage of VTEC. in DOHC VTEC you get intake and exhaust control while in the SOHC vtecs only the intake side.
all other honda motor are simply just like any motor out there with exceptions of rotation (hondas till '02 used to spin in counter-clockwise direction which was not seen anywhere else)

hope this helps, otherwise its time to hit:

sohcs do rock though, they're all around inexpensive and you can still get hellish power out of them

sohc

one cam vs. two cams

timing is alot easier on the single cam motors....easier to work on and cheap parts

Well, my '95 GS-R is DOHC-VTEC, and the VTEC 'feature' is only on the exhaust cam. Just means it HAS 2 camshafts, doesn't mean both of em have VTEC...

DOHC puts a camshaft above each row of valves. Usually SOHC has to have longer or bigger tappets, to reach the valves. This means more reciprocating mass.

also the dohc head/motor usually flows a lot better than the sohc.
