differences between b16/b18c1/b18c5 head???

B18c5 is the wildes out of those 3. The B16A2 and B18C5 (Type-R) head are the exact same, PR-3 cast piece. The difference is in cams, valvetrain, mild port and polish on type r head, intake manifold.

Ok... I haven't seen much written so I'm going to try from memory.
Mechanically, the B18c1 heads have a different upper bolt pattern where the intake attaches. That's only significant for the choice of intakes. FYI.
Intake runners are slightly larger bore in the R's -- so there is a leaning towards the high RPMs that may loose you a little down (say 4k?).
I saw a flowbench comparison of the b16 .vs. B18c1 and the B16 won out at the high end.. though only slightly. R's come with a mild port around the valves. If you're paying for headwork from a good shop, the 'R' porting advantage is probably neutralized.
Combustion chamber shape -- I think the R's are more pent roof.
The GSR .vs. B16 / Type R have a different cylinder head volume. Check out the table at:

If you have access to someone who does good work on heads, take your pick. If not, pick either the B16A, b17A, or B18C5 head.
The C5 has a slight advantage out of the box, but if you're doing valves/springs/cams/retainers/porting then they're a push.

forgive me if I'm wrong but Aren't the b16a2 and the b18c5 heads different... I thought there were gains from simply swapping the head from an si to a type r.
I just read somewher on here that they're the same castings but I'm pretty sure that you get gains from the b16 over the c5.
