desoldering and soldering??????
i have a p28 that i am wishing to chip but i was wondering how hard it is to do yourself i have the socket and the chip this isnt a cheap ecu so i was doubting doing it myself! i was wondering how hard it acually is?? b/c if i cant do it i think i just wont chip it all the chip does is change vtec engagment and redline
thanks
thanks

thanks but will you lin kme to the haccko solder suck thing and iron you were talkin about i want to do this right and not screw up a nice p28
is this something i can do and do you have a vid of the desoldering process i've never desoldered before this is why im asking.
what other tools could i use that are afforable but will make sure they wont damage the ecu

i use a suction desoldering iron, there are nice electrical ones, but a manual one works for me.
desoldering wick dont work so good with ecu's
youll need a low watt grounded soldering iron.
practice on something else 1st..

thanks how much are electric suckers and can u get them at radioshack?
what a soldering gun you reccomend for ecu socketing

Radio shack does not sell electronic solder suckers. (to my knowledge).
I don't recommend you DIY unless you can carleless if you damage your ecu....
I have seen countless numbers of people damage ecus trying to DIY using radioshack equipment.
Good Luck

Practice on something else first. Then work on your ECU but FIRST make sure you get good(real good) at both soldering and desoldering. It just takes practice. The people who do it themselves are the people who tinker around with the **** to begin with. You gotta start somewhere. Also don't use the solder wick either, it's a pain in the *** because of the coating over the circuit board. also, FYI I used a POS 42 Watt iron from the 70's and desoldering braid to do mine. But I wouldn't suggest it.
Imptricer;
It's not hard! Just get a good soldering iron (that isn't too hot), liquid flux, and some solderwick.
Here is a write-up I did;

As for something to "test" on, just get a computer circuit board and start removing stuff. Or how about an old cell phone circuit board.

You can pull apart and practice on virtually all consumer electronics - old radios, computers, and the like. The cheapest way to play with this is to go and buy a through-hole prototyping board. They're generally a plain board with an array of holes with a copper pad on one side and a printed grid on the other. Next, fill in a few of the holes with solder so that it looks like the ECU. You now have a practice board.
sorry guys i just want to make sure im not gona screw this up thanks for the info
is it easy to get solder on the board of the ecu using desoldering wick? or a solder sucker?
is this what ruins the ecu?
its okay to put liqiud flux on the board it slef
thanks

what you can do also, if you're not going to use the stock chip is to cut off all the legs using a small wire cutter or snipps, but leave enough material so you can pull it off with long nose pliers one by one while heating it up with the soldering iron. once all the legs of the stock chip are out,you can just easily desolder the all the holes clean with any desoldering tool. in that way you wont have a hard time pulling out the whole chip without breaking some of the connection traces. anyway, thats just a suggestion.
You want good soldering equipment, here it is:
Metcal SP440 vacuum desoldering station and an Metcal SP200 Soldering station. That's about a kilobuck of soldering equipment... not very practical for a one time user.
I like Kester 44 solder BTW for work like you are doing.
I buy all my soldering products from http://www.wassco.com/

so i guess a pencil soldering iron would b the best for my first time use with desoldering braid? how many watt pencil would i want 25? 30? more?
does any1 knwo where i can find a really good write up?

also i guy told me to spray only crc brakleen on the underside of the circuit board b4 and after soldering? is this true? and he said scrub the sodler joints with a toothbrush?

My school has Metcal equipment and from first hand experience, it's really the best money can buy. Can't wait till I'm out of college so I can afford stuff like that.
Also, is there a big difference in solders? I've never really researched it and just used your average 60/40 rosin core solder cause I thought they were all the same. Sorry to put you on the spot but what are the differences and are they noticeable?

dont use crc brakleen. go to ur local electronic store (radioshack,frys,etc...) and look for FLUX remover. spray it on the circuit board then use tooth brush lightly or wipe it with shop towel after soldering and desoldering. that should clean it up good.
also, yes it would be nice to have good soldering and desoldering tool but it's useless if you don't know how to use it properly. practice practice practice first on whatever circuit board before touching your ecu. you dont want those traces to come off.
trust me, i do this kind of work everyday.
anyway, good luck on the install.

best way to do it if there is a chip in the way. i did my obd0 pm6 that way, and i just used a low temp soldering iron and desoldering braid and it worked out just fine. i did practice on an old 24k baud modem i had lying around first though.
old computer pci cards and such are great for practice. i practiced for about 2 hours before i tore into my pm6, and i did just fine.
also, to solder the chip or socket in, put the socket or chip into the location on the board, use the soldering iron to heat up the pin of the socket, and touch the solder to the pin, not to the tip of the iron. that method really helps in making a good connection to the traces on the board and also helps to not get solder all over.

Did you bother to read the write-up that I linked to upper section of this string?
It says that a 25 watt soldering iron should be used.
It shows the usage of solderwick.
It says that the old flux should be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol.
The write-up is even about a P28!
How much more do you want?????

i want to hear the opinion from more than 1 user thanks for the info i dont need your attitude i want to make sure its true thanks for the write up it was great

I'll admit to coping an attitude and it may not be justified. (I'm old and cranky)
It wouldn't have bothered me at all if there were items in the write-up that you questioned or wanted clearification, but everything is there and answers your questions. It just seemed like you didn't bother to read it.
In one of your follow-up responses after I posted the link, you even ask if there happens to be a write-up anywhere.
