Default The derivation of compression measurement and its elements

Im writing this post to help gain a finer understanding of the intricacies of accurate compression measurement. In simplest terms I understand the compression of an engine is the ratio of the maximum to the minimum volume within the cylinder, between the piston and cylinder head.

I have a few questions as to the meaning of a few engine measurement terms that are taken into consideration when calculating compression ratio; Specifically, what is block height, compression height, dome volume and dish volume all measures of? Also does the measurement for head volume include the concave valve dish? And what about the head gasket?
