Default Degreeing Cams?

What exactly does degreeing cams do? Does it find the optimal cam gear settings instead of using trial and error on the dyno?

I ask because my new cam came with directions on how to degree it, even though it's for a SOHC. I thought cam degreeing was DOHC stuff.

Degreeing the cam locates it in proper relationship with the crank. This eliminates variations due to milling the head or block, timing belt length, gear variations etc...

So is this some kind of necessary step? I know my block was never decked, and I'm 90% sure my head was never milled. The timing belt is new so it shouldn't be stretched. Everything should be in spec.

Doesn't degreeing require an adjustable cam gear?

Most people don't do it... but it is recommended.

Bump for more info on this "degreeing" business. Is it essentially just finding the optimal cam gear setting? Can you degree a cam without an adjustable cam gear?

You can check it,you just can't change it.

Not optimal...just where the cam manufacturer intended for specific valve events to happen in relation to the crank.
