D16Y8 Seized and Crusted, Save the Head?
I opened up a seized D16Y8, thinking that there would be big chunks of metal inside and found that it was intact, but the pistons and head had charred flakes (about like corn flake cereal). Cylinder walls look glazed, but not scarred. I don't know the history, got it with a parts car. The block is seized hard and is going to be scrap. Should I offer the head for sale/rebuild or throw it in the scrap bin. The valve train still moves & top side of the head looks fine.
I'm not an engine builder. I take things apart better than I assemble.

I figured that the block would be junk, but I suppose its all rebuildable. I'm still wondering what caused it, thinking it would have to be fuel contamination. Does sugar in gas actually do that? It was seized hard enough to get the pulley off with one wrench.
Thanks.
Thanks.
i pulled appart a seized y8 and the only damage was from a spun rod bearing. seems a common problem on these when they're neglected. i also was able to break the pulley bolt loose without holding the crank. but once i got the one bad rod/bearing off it spun freely. in my case the crank keyway was also damaged so i scrapped the crank itself, but would otherwise be salvagable with a quick regrind at the machine shop.
I would bet you have a similar failure. i would get in there and see what the real cause is, then you could probably sell what's still good/salvagable, or keep for spares (my favorite option.)
