Default D16Y VTEC question - please help if you can

I recently added an OBX exhaust and an AEM Cold Air Intake to my '98 Civic EX w/ a D16Y engine. The problem is, I used to be able to tell when the VTEC kicked in. Now that I added the mods, I can't hear or feel it. According to what I've seen online, it's supposed to kick in at 4500 RPM on this engine. Can anyone verify this fact? Also, anyone have a similar experience with a SOHC VTEC with intake/exhaust mods? If this is not right, anyone know how to tell if your VTEC is indeed engaging? Any help/information will be appreciated. Thanks guys (and gals).

vtec kicks in at 5500 rpms

it is quiet, and your obx exhaust probably drowns out the sound of the engine, just gets a little higher pitched. i can hear mine if i listen really close.
