Default cv boots

need some help. steering is pretty hard at lower speeds. ive heard there is no power steering on the 89 dx hatch. true or false? also, when turning left, i get this knocking sound like my cv boots are jacked. havent put her up on stands yet to clearify, but will do so. if there is no power steering, then can it be by cv boots thats is whats causing the hard as hell turning? any help would be appreciated.

Look at your CV boots and see if they are torn and grease is visible. If so, and it is hard to steer, sounds like your CV joints are shot and you probably need rebuilt axles. ~$50 each from Autozone, ~$180 each from dealer.
